3-Methylbenzyl alcohol is a hydroxy group with an activated hydrogen. It has regulatory properties due to its hydroxyl group and carbonyl group. The biphenyl moiety has benzoate sequences with activation energies, which are determined from the p-450 isozymes gene product. 3-Methylbenzyl alcohol is used in sample preparation, which requires it to be activated by oxidation. This analytical method can be used to measure the concentrations of 3-methylbenzyl alcohol in various types of biological samples. Metabolic profiles show that 3-methylbenzyl alcohol is metabolized through oxidation or reduction by cytochrome P450 enzymes or conjugation with glucuronic acid.
