2,5-Norbornadiene is a chemical compound with the molecular formula C6H4. It is a colorless liquid that has a pungent odor. 2,5-Norbornadiene is a hydrogenated form of norbornadiene and can be found in dianthus caryophyllus (pink carnation). In plant physiology, this compound is involved in root formation, as well as the inhibition of enzymes such as hexacyclic hydrolases. Norbornadiene also inhibits hexacyclic hydrolases, which are enzymes that catalyze the reaction between acetic acid and glyoxylic acid to produce hexenal and glyoxylic acid. Norbornadiene has been shown to inhibit the activity of these enzymes in vitro. This may be due to its ability to bind to iron atoms with nitrogen atoms or its ability to react with hydrogen chloride.
