Descripción:1,4-Naphthoquinone is a phenolic compound that has been shown to have antimicrobial activity. It has been used in vitro as an antifungal agent for the treatment of dermatophyte infections and has also shown significant cytotoxicity against certain cancer cell lines. 1,4-Naphthoquinone is a redox active compound with a redox potential of -0.6 V vs NHE. This redox potential may be responsible for its potent antimicrobial activity. 1,4-Naphthoquinone also exhibits significant transfer reactions that may contribute to its biological properties. It is classified as group P2 and reacts with sodium salts to form naphthoquinones and sodium salts. This reaction may be responsible for its antimicrobial properties, as these compounds are known to inhibit microbial growth by binding to bacterial DNA gyrase or topoisomerases I and II.
