The inhibition of this enzyme leads to the accumulation of malonic acid, which inhibits the production of ATP. This inhibition may lead to cell death or inhibitory effects on other enzyme activities. 8-Nitroquinoline has been shown to be effective against Leishmania parasites in vivo.
