It can be synthesized by reacting phenylacetic acid with nitric acid, which is then oxidized to 3-nitrophenol with potassium permanganate. The product is then reacted with acetic anhydride to produce 3-nitrophenylacetic acid. This chemical has been shown to inhibit plant physiology and chlorophyll production by binding reversibly to the protein photosystem II in plants. 3-Nitrophenylaceticacid reacts with chloride ions to form a reversible covalent bond, which may be hydrolyzed by water or alkali.
