N-(4-Pentynyl)phthalimide also has a molecular weight of 249.28, which is lower than many other emulsifying agents, making it more suitable for use with low concentrations of water. It can be used as a ligand to study the uptake of lipophilic compounds across cell membranes because it binds bile salts and bilirubin. N-(4-Pentynyl)phthalimide has been shown to be effective at killing brain tumor cells in tissue culture by inhibiting their growth by inhibiting protein synthesis.
