(1R)-(-)-Nopol is a terpenoid compound that has been found to be effective in killing mosquitoes. It is synthesized from benzyl alcohol by microbial transformation with Pseudomonas sp. The compound undergoes biotransformations, including the conversion of benzyl alcohol to chromanone and subsequent conversion of chromanone to (1R)-(-)-nopol. The synthesis of (1R)-(-)-nopol has been optimized through the use of randomization and regression techniques. Additional experiments are needed to validate its effectiveness against other insect species.
