The reaction mechanism for this compound involves intramolecular hydrogen transfer from the Ni atom to the chloride ligand. Nickel(II) chloride can be prepared by reacting nickel with hydrochloric acid and chlorine gas in a vessel containing triticum aestivum (wheat bran). This reaction produces a green-colored solid that forms as crystals when it is dissolved in water. Nickel(II) chloride has been shown to have enzymatic activity against animals, such as rats and mice, due to its ability to inhibit protein synthesis. It also reacts with water vapor to produce chlorine gas.
