1-Nitroso-1H-imidazole is a fluorophore that has been used as a probe for the detection of ligands and cytotoxicity. The intramolecular nature of the 1-nitroso-1H-imidazole molecule allows it to be easily excited by light, which leads to its emission. 1-Nitroso-1H-imidazole is sensitive to pH and temperature changes, which can lead to enhanced emission in these conditions. In addition, 1-nitroso-1H-imidazole can be used as a photosensitizer for photochemical reactions, such as the generation of singlet oxygen, and can also act as an electron transfer agent.
