It is an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of phosphate esters, releasing inorganic phosphate and alcohols. 2-Naphthyl phosphate disodium salt has potential use as a model system for studying phosphatases. The protein complements a mutant Escherichia coli strain defective in acid phosphatase activity and increases the yields of adenylic acid when it is present at high concentrations. This enzyme also binds to sulfate ions and appears to be repressed by them at low pH values. 2-Naphthyl phosphate disodium salt hydrolyzes molecules with a wide variety of chemical structures, yielding various products.
