Naled is a neurotoxic organophosphate insecticide that inhibits the activity of the P450 enzyme. It is used to control agricultural pests, such as flies and mosquitoes, and is also used in public health to prevent the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. Naled has been shown to have no effect on plant metabolism. In vitro assays have shown that naled has an LD50 of 1.5 ppm and LC50 of 2.0 ppm for hl-60 cells, which are human lymphocytes. This drug has been shown to be toxic at sublethal doses and can cause neurological effects when absorbed through the skin or inhaled. Naled is reactive in basic solution and can cause respiratory irritation, bronchitis, pulmonary edema, or death when inhaled or ingested. The chemical structure of naled is similar to other chemicals that are known to cause cancer in animals (eugenol).
