Naratriptan is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that relieves the symptoms of migraine, including nausea, photophobia, and phonophobia. Naratriptan is structurally related to other triptans such as sumatriptan and zolmitriptan. Naratriptan binds to the 5-HT1D/1B receptors on the trigeminal nerve, which results in vasoconstriction and decreased release of inflammatory substances from mast cells in the blood vessels of the brain. The efficacy of naratriptan in treating migraine headaches was statistically significant compared with placebo when studied in an intent-to-treat population. Naratriptan has few side effects but may cause serious cardiac side effects such as myocardial infarction or cerebrovascular events. It also interacts with other drugs such as monoamine oxidase inhibitors, ergot alkaloids, and selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors.
