Nitrofluorescein, isomer 1 (Niflumic acid) is a fluorescent compound that is used as a biomarker for the detection of tissue damage. This drug is an analog of fluorescein and can be used to label proteins with the amino group. The fluorescence emission spectrum of this drug can be changed by changing the pH of the solution. Nitrofluorescein, isomer 1 has been found to bind to DNA at physiological concentrations and inhibits polymerase activity, leading to cell death. Nitrofluorescein, isomer 1 also has an inhibitory effect on diacetate-induced mutagenesis in bacteria, which may be due to its ability to act as a pyrylium acceptor in place of oxygen.
