Nordeprenyl is a trifluoroacetic acid derivative that has been shown to improve visual function in people with eye disorders. Nordeprenyl has been shown to inhibit the formation of reactive oxygen species and increase mitochondrial membrane potential. It has also been used as a chemical inhibitor in combination preparations for treatment trials of Parkinson's disease. Nordeprenyl is not active against neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease or stroke, but it may be useful in treating diseases related to light exposure such as macular degeneration and retinal phototoxicity. Nordeprenyl is metabolized by recombinant cytochrome P450 enzymes, which are found in the brain and retina. The drug also enhances neurotrophic factors and increases levels of dopamine, which are important for neurological function.
