Naphthalene balls are used as a diagnostic tool to identify the presence of naphthalene in the blood. Naphthalene is an aromatic hydrocarbon that is widely used in industry, including the manufacture of mothballs and other insecticides. It can be absorbed through skin contact or inhalation and has been linked to hemolysis (rupture of red blood cells) in humans, intravascular hemolysis, and acute kidney injury. The use of naphthalene balls for diagnosis is considered an ethnoveterinary practice as it is primarily performed on animals.
