The formation of 3-nitrotyrosine is associated with neuronal death in neurodegenerative diseases. Analysis of 3-nitrotyrosine has shown the presence of nitrate and nitrite, which suggests that it may be involved in the pathogenic mechanism for atherosclerosis. This compound is also genotoxic, as shown by its ability to cause DNA strand breaks and DNA crosslinks.
