p-Nitrosotoluene is an organic compound that is an aromatic nitroso compound and a precursor to other nitroso compounds. It reacts with sodium trifluoroacetate in the presence of hydrochloric acid to form p-nitrosodimethylaniline, which can be used for the synthesis of many other nitroso compounds. The reaction system is linear over a range of 0.1-10 mmol of reactants and has a constant rate across this range. p-Nitrosotoluene can be used as a standard for the measurement of amines in biological samples.
