Naphazoline nitrate is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug that inhibits the production of prostaglandins. It is used as an antidote for poisoning by organophosphates, carbamates, and oximes. Naphazoline nitrate also has antimicrobial properties and is used to treat eye infections caused by bacteria or fungi. The absorption enhancers sodium citrate and sodium bicarbonate are added to naphazoline nitrate in order to increase its absorption through the cornea.
