2-Nitrophenyl phenyl sulfone is an antigen that is a potential HIV treatment. It binds to the HIV protein gp120, inhibiting its ability to bind to CD4+ T cells. The potential antiviral activity of 2-Nitrophenyl phenyl sulfone has been validated in a number of laboratory studies and clinical trials. It has been shown that 2-Nitrophenyl phenyl sulfone can inhibit the transcriptional activity of HIV by preventing the binding of RNA polymerase II to DNA templates. This inhibition prevents the synthesis of mRNA and viral proteins.
