3-Nitrothiobenzamide is an analytical reagent that can be used to detect the presence of chloride in a sample. It is a light yellow solid that can be dissolved in organic solvents, such as chloroform, ether, and benzene. 3-Nitrothiobenzamide reacts with chloride ions to form a pink color. This reaction is highly reproducible and can be reversed by adding acid or base. The photometric detection limit for 3-nitrothiobenzamide is 10 ppm.
3-Nitrothiobenzamide also has been shown to inhibit the H1 histamine receptor, which may explain its effects on the central nervous system.
