Alpha-naphthoic acid ethyl ester (ANAEE) is a synthetic, low molecular weight compound that has been shown to have inhibitory properties against carcinoma cells. The molecule is believed to work by cleaving the bond between methylene and carbonyl groups in functional theory, which prevents the formation of a new methylene group. ANAEE has been synthesised from alpha-naphthol and ethyl bromoacetate. This synthesis proceeds through selective protection of the alpha-hydroxyl group followed by nucleophilic substitution of the terminal methyl group on the naphthalene ring with ethyl bromoacetate. The final product is obtained through hydrolysis and decarboxylation.
