3-Octylthiophene is a boronic ester that is synthesized by reacting 3-octylaniline with diborane. The compound has reactive properties, which are useful for the synthesis of polymer films. It can be used as a model complex for molecules and polymers. 3-Octylthiophene has been shown to be an excellent electron acceptor in the presence of other electron donors, such as benzophenone. This property makes it an ideal material for organic electronic devices, such as photovoltaic cells and field effect transistors. 3-Octylthiophene also has low energy optical properties that make it suitable for use in optical microscopy. The compound is stable at room temperature and can be polymerized in high concentrations without forming crystalline structures.
