3-Oxo-3-(2-pyridinyl)propanenitrile (OPN) is an electrophilic compound that reacts with nucleophiles via an electrophilic attack. It is a white crystalline solid that can be stored in a refrigerator for up to two years. OPN has been shown to react with metal cations such as potassium, sodium, and calcium. The reaction yields are dependent on the amount of chloride present in the solution. X-ray crystallography has been used to determine the regiochemistry and isothiocyanate addition products of this substance.
