Oxychlordane has been shown to have dose-dependent effects on rat liver microsomes and mitochondria of humans, with the toxicity being more pronounced in females than males. This chemical also can cause an increase in body mass index for both sexes. Oxychlordane has been shown to decrease the mitochondrial membrane potential, which leads to apoptosis or death of fatty acid cells. Oxychlordane also has a variety of effects on fatty acid synthesis, including inhibiting the activity of enzymes such as phospholipase A2 and acyl-CoA synthetase.
