Octyl isothiocyanate is a dithiocarbamic compound that is derived from the cruciferous vegetable, nasturtium officinale. It has been shown to inhibit growth of cancer cells, such as human breast adenocarcinoma (MDA-MB231) and human prostate (LNCaP) cells, by inhibition of tyrosine kinase activity. Octyl isothiocyanate also has anticancer activity against various cancers, including colorectal cancer, lung cancer, gastric cancer and pancreatic carcinoma. This compound inhibits epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), a protein found in most epithelial cancers.
Octyl isothiocyanate has shown to be more potent than its parent compound sulforaphane in inducing apoptosis in prostate cancer cells. One mechanism of this effect may be through caspase-3 activation. It also inhibits the expression of epidermal growth factor
