Octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether is a surfactant that is used in the production of detergents. It has been shown to inhibit the formation of disulfide bonds, which are necessary for the stability and activity of proteins. Octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether reacts with sodium dodecyl sulfate to form a hydrophilic molecule, and it can be used as a buffer to maintain the pH levels in detergents. The structural biology of octaethylene glycol monododecyl ether has been studied extensively by X-ray crystallography and electron microscopy. This compound inhibits the binding of inhibitor molecules to enzymes that have ester linkages.
