The mechanism of action involves oxidation of the hydroxyl group on the alpha carbon atom in the molecule and subsequent formation of an intramolecular hydrogen bond with another hydroxy group on a different molecule. This inhibits ATP production by binding to the oxygen atoms in ATP, which are needed for energy production reactions.
