It is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits Gram-positive bacteria, such as Aerobacter aerogenes and Staphylococcus aureus. Octanoic acid has been shown to be effective in inhibiting the growth of Gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
