It has been shown to have anti-secretory effects on organisms and to be a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme histamine N-methyltransferase. The molecule can be synthesized in an asymmetric synthesis by reacting piperidine with chloral hydrate, giving rise to two different optical isomers. 2-Oxocyclopentaneacetic acid inhibits prostaglandin synthesis, which may account for its antisecretory properties.
