Octadecyl-trimethoxysilane (OTMS) is a chemical compound that is stable in air, water, and most organic solvents. It can be used for sample preparation, such as the removal of lipids from biological samples. OTMS has been shown to react with hydroxyl groups to form silanol groups. OTMS also reacts with the chinese herb Polygonum multiflorum to form a light-sensitive product that inhibits human serum albumin aggregation. OTMS has been shown to have a particle size of about 25 nm and transport properties similar to those of water. OTMS is also used as a model system in electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and titration calorimetry experiments on ionic liquids.
