n-Octyltrimethylammonium chloride is a hydrophobic ionic compound that is used as a surfactant. It is a strong cationic surfactant that has been shown to be effective in the removal of contaminants from water and wastewater. n-Octyltrimethylammonium chloride is often used in oil and gas production, where it can be found in drilling fluids, fracturing fluids, and completion fluids. This chemical has also been studied for its ability to remove radioactive material from water. n-Octyltrimethylammonium chloride’s hydroxyl group interacts with the hydrogen tartrate (HOCOCH) and sodium carbonate (NaCO), forming the salt HOCONa. The hydrophobic effect allows this chemical to stabilize other compounds such as fatty acids by binding them to the surface of the molecule.
