2-Oxo-2H-chromene-6-carboxylic acid is a cytosolic enzyme that catalyzes the oxidation of a variety of substrates. It has been shown to have a high specificity for active oxygen, such as hydrogen peroxide and superoxide. The enzyme also has fluorescence properties that are used in biomedical research to study the cytosol in living cells. 2-Oxo-2H-chromene-6-carboxylic acid has been shown to inhibit tumor growth and cancer therapy by inducing apoptosis, or programmed cell death, in human serum and cancer cells. To date, this enzyme has not been studied extensively in animals or humans.
