4-Oxohexanoic acid is an organic compound with the formula CH3(CH2)4COOH. It is a long-chain carboxylic acid that inhibits the germination of seeds and has a strong inhibitory effect on carbonyl group. 4-Oxohexanoic acid can be synthesized by the reaction of oxalyl chloride and long chain alcohols in the presence of a base. The product can be isolated using crystallography and then hydrolyzed to form 4-oxohexanoic acid. The mechanism of inhibition may involve chlorination at the alpha position, which would convert the carboxyl group into a chloride, thereby preventing its participation in any enzymatic reactions.
