Oleanolic acid methyl ester (OLAM) is a fatty acid that has been shown to have hemolytic activity in tissue culture. OLAM is a natural compound found in plants and fruits, such as olive oil and apple peel extract. It has been shown to have an anti-hepatitis effect in rats, which may be due to the inhibition of fatty acid synthesis. OLAM is metabolized by microbial metabolism and activated by glycosidic bond hydrolysis. The hydroxyl group on the oleanolic acid methyl ester can be converted into an alcohol or carboxylic acid through oxidation or reduction reactions, respectively. This conversion can occur through the action of certain enzymes called dehydrogenases, which are present in mammalian cells. OLAM has been shown to have anticonvulsant effects in mice with epilepsy. In addition, it has been shown to inhibit the growth of cervical cancer cells and infectious diseases such as HIV-1 and herpes simplex virus
