Octafluoropentane is a fluorinated form of pentane, a hydrocarbon. It is used as a solvent in chemical reactions and as an antifreeze in industrial processes. Octafluoropentane has been shown to be reactive with alcohols, leading to the formation of ethers. This compound has also been found to react with chlorides and hydrofluorocarbons at high temperatures, forming chloride-substituted octafluoropentanes. Formamide, which is the simplest amide, can be formed from the reaction of octafluoropentane with ammonia or primary amines.
