Phenyltrimethylammonium chloride is a low-potency methanol solvent used in combination preparations. It has been shown to inhibit the replication of DNA and RNA by inhibiting the activity of polymerases, which are enzymes that synthesize DNA. Phenyltrimethylammonium chloride inhibits the growth of mouse tumors when combined with other drugs. FT-IR spectroscopy has been used to identify the presence of hydroxyl groups and structural analysis has confirmed the presence of a hydrochloric acid molecule. The phase transition temperature for this compound is -123°C.
