Phosphorus pentoxide is a compound that is used for the treatment of wastewater, as a fertilizer and in the manufacture of glycol ethers. It can be produced by reacting copper chloride with phosphorus at high temperature and pressure. The reaction mechanism for this process is not well understood but it has been proposed that hydrogen fluoride reacts with metal hydroxides to produce phosphorus pentoxide. This compound has biological properties, which may be due to its ability to form complexes with heavy metals and other organic compounds. Phosphorus pentoxide also has an antioxidant effect on plant cells, which may be related to its activity as a nutrient solution.
