It binds to the mitochondria and inhibits adenine nucleotide translocation, leading to the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential and the release of cytosolic calcium. This leads to activation of proapoptotic proteins, such as Bax and Bak, which initiates caspase-independent apoptosis. PPC also induces light emission from phospholipid hydroperoxide decomposition, which can be used as a biomarker for cellular physiology.
