Uridine is an organic chemical compound that is classified as a pyrimidine. It can be found in the nucleic acids of DNA and RNA, where it forms hydrogen bonds with cytosine and thymine, respectively. Uridine has been shown to interact with enzymes such as uridyl diphosphate synthase, which catalyzes the synthesis of uridine-5′-diphosphate from uracil and 5-phospho-D-ribose 1-diphosphate. Uridine also has antiinflammatory activity, which may be due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) levels. Pyrimidines are also important for various metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus type 2 (DM2).
