The compound has also been shown to have proton and carboxylate properties. This means it can be used as an ionophore in water molecules and is able to bind with carbonyl groups. 3,3'-(1,4-Phenylene)dipropanoic acid may also react with an aryl halide to produce an aryl ester or an aryl ether.
