The crystal structure of the monoclinic form has been solved by X-ray diffraction and found to have a molecular formula of C11H9N3O2. The crystalline form can be identified using mass spectrometry, which will show two peaks corresponding to the two isomers. The melting point of 5-phenylpyrimidine-2-carboxylic acid is 154°C and its boiling point is 243°C. It has a density of 1.65 g/mL at room temperature and 1.80 g/mL at 100°C.
