Pneumocandin C(0) is a chromatographic echinocandin that inhibits the enzyme activity of β-1,3-glucan synthase. The hydroxyl group at the C-0 position of the molecule makes it more hydrophobic and less susceptible to hydrolysis by esterases in comparison to other echinocandins. It also has metal ion binding properties, which make it more resistant to degradation by proteases. Pneumocandin C(0) has an antifungal effect against Candida albicans and Cryptococcus neoformans and can be used as an antifungal agent in combination with other drugs.
