3-Phenoxyphenylacetonitrile is a solid phase microextraction (SPME) extractant that is used for the preparation of samples for gas chromatography. It has been shown to be an effective extractant for pyrethroid insecticides, which are commonly used in agriculture. 3-Phenoxyphenylacetonitrile has also been shown to be a good solvent for formamide and can be used as an asymmetric synthesis catalyst. The thermal isomerization of this compound is catalysed by potassium chlorate and sodium chloride. 3-Phenoxyphenylacetonitrile has been shown to inhibit the growth of organisms such as fungi and bacteria at low concentrations, but its usefulness as a fumigant or pesticide has not been evaluated.
