Pentamethylbenzoicacid is a monocarboxylic acid that can be derived from terephthalic acid. It is used in the production of hydroxybenzoic acid and modifiers, such as pentamethylbenzene. Pentamethylbenzoic acid can be used as an oxidant for the cleavage of bonds in organic compounds. This technique is called liquid phase oxidation (LPO). The reactions are carried out at temperatures between 0-130°C and at a pressure of 1-5 bar. Pentamethylbenzoicacid is also used to produce methyl groups by using aluminium chloride or chlorosilanes as the modifier.
The reaction proceeds via a radical chain mechanism with the intermediates being methyl radicals and hydroxyl radicals.
