(3R,4S)-4-Phenylpyrrolidine-3-carboxylicacid is a μ-opioid receptor agonist that exhibits locomotor activating and antidepressant-like effects in vivo. It also has antinociceptive properties, which may be mediated by the opioid receptor. The enantiomers of (3R,4S)-4-phenylpyrrolidine-3-carboxylic acid exhibit stereoselective binding to the μ-opioid receptor. This compound was used as a surrogate to study the interaction of ligands with the μ-opioid receptor. In vivo studies have shown that this agent has antidepressant activity in animals and humans.
