Palladium is a transition metal that has been used to reduce the concentration of nitrite in wastewater. Palladium on activated carbon (Pd/C) has been shown to be effective in reducing nitrite ion concentrations, but only when the palladium is in a bound form. When palladium is present as a free element, it binds to the carbon surface and prevents its use as a catalyst. Palladium also has many biological effects including inducing hyperproliferation of cells and antimicrobial activity against certain bacteria. It can also be used for the treatment of infectious diseases such as tuberculosis by binding to bacterial DNA. Palladium can also be detected using plasma mass spectrometry with zirconium oxide (ZrO2) as an internal standard.
