2,3-Pentanedione is an organic compound that can be used as an analytical method for determining the concentration of formaldehyde. It reacts with sodium carbonate to produce a white precipitate of sodium acetate, which can then be quantified by titration with hydrochloric acid and phenolphthalein as an indicator. Bronchiolitis obliterans can be caused by propionyl, which is metabolized by diacetyl reductase into diacetyl. 2,3-Pentanedione has also been shown to react with inorganic acids such as sulfuric acid and nitric acid to produce methyl ethyl ketone. This reaction is reversible and the equilibrium constant depends on the concentration of 2,3-pentanedione. The rate of this reaction is determined through kinetic data obtained from experiments involving different concentrations of 2,3-pentanedione and the inorganic acid.
