3,8-Phenanthroline is a magnetic compound that can be synthesised from phenanthrolines and metal cations. It has been shown to have a layered crystal structure with metal cations on the surface and organic ligands in the interior. The synthesis of 3,8-phenanthroline has been studied by spectroscopy methods such as Raman spectral analysis and photoelectron spectroscopy. 3,8-Phenanthroline is also soluble in oleum and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies have revealed that it is composed of molybdenum.
