Penicillanic acid is a natural antibiotic that is formed by the hydrolysis of penicillin and is used clinically for the treatment of infectious diseases. Penicillanic acid inhibits protein synthesis in bacterial cells by binding to the ribosome at a specific site and, as a result, inhibiting peptide bond formation. This chemical has been shown to have high resistance, due to its methoxy groups, which inhibit enzyme catalysis. Penicillanic acid also inhibits gram-negative organisms more effectively than gram-positive organisms due to its inhibitory properties on enzymes that are not inhibited by penicillin. Molecular modeling studies have shown how this chemical binds to the ribosome and prevents peptide bond formation.
