Propionaldehyde diethyl acetal (PDA) is a pharmaceutical preparation that has been used to treat inflammatory and infectious diseases. PDA is a nucleophilic reactant that reacts with diallyl trisulfide in the presence of trifluoroacetic acid to form an acetal. The reaction vessel must be deuterium-enriched to prevent side reactions from occurring. The carbonyl group of PDA can be used for conjugation with polymers, which have been shown to have anti-inflammatory and anti-autoimmune effects.
